ESTA Pilot Program for Eligible Non-Canadian Citizens Traveling to the United States via Air or Sea
OTTAWA – Travelers to the United States from the 27 countries participating in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP) should be aware of a new pilot program for online registration of their intended travel. Please note that Canadian citizens are NOT subject to this new program.

As of August 1, 2008, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will begin piloting an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). Visa Waiver Program citizens who would not otherwise require a visa (mainly those who are visiting the U.S. for 90 days or less for business or pleasure) are subject to new ESTA requirements. ESTA registration is only for visitors traveling by air or sea; land-border crossings are exempt. [more]

Proposed DHS Changes To Exit Procedures And Residents Of Canada
Ottawa, April 24, 2008 - The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced today a notice of proposed rulemaking that will establish biometric exit procedures at all U.S air and sea ports of departure. The majority of non-U.S. citizens are already required to submit digital fingerprints and a digital photograph for admission into the country. The US-VISIT Exit proposal would require non-U.S. citizens who provide biometric identifiers for admission to also provide digital fingerprints when departing the country from any air or sea ports of departure.<

The Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa is responsible for Eastern Ontario (Kingston, Lanark, Leeds, Prescott, Renfrew, Russell and Stormont); Western Quebec (Gatineau, Hull, Labelle, Papineau, Pontiac and Temiscamingue). Individuals requiring consular services who are not in our consular district should contact the U.S. Consulate closest to your location.
