5 March 2012: Assistant DHS Secretary Speaks in Ottawa

Alan Bersin, Assistant Secretary of International Affairs and Chief Diplomatic Officer for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security spoke to business leaders at the American Chamber of Commerce's U.S.-Canada "Beyond the Border" Speaker Series, held at the Rideau Club on March 2.

Assistant Secretary Bersin spoke about economic and security issues in relation to the new Beyond the Border Action Plan. He outlined the plan and some of its goals, including addressing threats earlier, making the border more efficient, increasing co-operation between law enforcement and border agencies, improving cyber-security, and promoting resiliency through common interest. He emphasized the need to put aside the false choice between security and trade, and to view economic competitiveness on continental terms.

"Unless we make this border more efficient, we cannot actually raise the security profile we share together," Bersin said.
